Moffat, Hugh East Anglia's First Railways United Kingdom Terence Dalton 1987 086138038X / 9780861380381 First Edition Hardback in Dustjacket Very Good Very Good QUITE SCARCE. This hardback book in dustjacket contains 228 printed pages, the history of the Eastern Union Railway in text, maps, illustrations, drawings, several appendices. East Anglia's first railway, the Eastern Counties Railway, should have extended from London to Norwich and Yarmouth. Yet, despite the extraordinary efforts of a group of dissident shareholders to ensure that it reached Suffolk and Norfolk, the line stopped at Colchester. The leader of the dissidents was John Chevallier Cobbold of Ipswich, who had supported earlier local railway proposals. And working on the construction of the E.C.R., until he was dismissed for neglecting his duties, was an ambitious young engineer named Peter Bruff. When he had completed his own scheme for extending the railway into East Anglia, Bruff had no doubt where to find a backer. The result was the Eastern Union Railway, the subject of this book. Some of the material, from archive sources, has never been published before; most of it has not been in print since it was topical 150 years ago. A very good hardback copy contained in a very good dustjacket that has a small edge tear Price:
